5 Tips for Choosing the Best Online Math Tutor
The first thing you should know is that the online math tutor is only going to be as good as your child's attitude.
What does this mean? Well, face it, if your child is not doing well in math, there are only a few reasons why this could be happening, not the least of which is that your child has decided that they really don’t care about math.
Now in some cases, you might expect this to be the job of a tutor – changing the attitude of your child, but you had better check first if the tutor considers it part of their job. Most don’t, nor should they. That is, unless you are paying them $600/hour or more, and even then the subject needs to be discussed beforehand.
If your child has a good attitude and is still having trouble with math, then there are lots of ways a tutor can help. Here’s three of the most common:
First, an online math tutor can help with homework; second, they can help by teaching something that was missed in class and then, finally, they can help students rebuild missing skills.
What should you look for when choosing an online math tutor?
Tip 1: Ask them what kind of tools they are using to deliver the tutoring. Remarkably, a lot of tutors are using archaic tools. An interactive whiteboard and telephone are the most important tools. Interactive means both the student and tutor can write on the board.
Tip 2: Next, find out their education and experience. You don’t have to feel bad about asking, and it will give you some idea of the price you are willing to pay.
Tip 3: Online math tutoring is a relatively new trade. You might want to find out if the tutor you are about to hire has experience tutoring online or JUST general tutoring.
Tip 4: The next thing is what materials are going to be used for tutoring. If your tutor has your child’s math materials or some way of getting them, this will create an excellent way for the student to ask appropriate questions.
Tip 5: Finally, who gets to do the work? Check in on the online session and make sure it isn’t more of the tutor teaching, and your child just having to sit there. Remember, you are paying to have your child learn. The tutor already knows this stuff or if they don’t, they should, and if your child isn’t doing most of the work, it might be time to find a new tutor.
